Roxanne & Tyler Couvillion - Central Area - June 2020
When you first meet Roxanne, you can hear her passion for Special Olympics, even though she has only been involved for two years. But, upon meeting her son Tyler, you get a great sense of why she is so passionate about our movement. Roxanne and Tyler are from Hessmer, LA, which is part of our Central Area. There, Roxanne is a coach for athletics, bocce, and bowling, while Tyler competes in bocce and bowling, having received one gold medal since he started competing in 2018.
When asked why she is a coach for SOLA she stated, “It gives me so much joy. The athletes have the purest hearts and give everything to the sport they play.” She continues, “seeing the happiness I can bring these athletes is the highlight of being a Special Olympics Coach.”
Roxanne has also been a teacher for 20 years, having retired in 2019 to care for Tyler. She is an award winning educator, being named Certiport Top Nine Technology Educators in 2009.
Tyler is a multi-sport athlete who especially likes to swim and is eager to compete in aquatics very soon. Besides Special Olympics, Tyler is heavily involved in Cub Scouts, where is has won numerous awards including the Arrow of Light, which is the highest award a Cub Scout can achieve before becoming a boy scout. Tyler also plays piano and resonator bells and really enjoys hunting with his Dad.
Above all, Roxanne and Tyler enjoy their time at SOLA and look forward to continuing to compete for years to come. When asked about her favorite part about SOLA Roxanne, stated “I love meeting everyone at planning meeting and games. All of the athletes are happy to be around each other!”
